17.8 Reservoir Inflow

Reservoirs collect and store water, most obviously for human consumption, but also for irrigation, generation of electricity, and also for industrial use. Reservoirs need to be carefully managed in order to ensure the supply of water under many scenarios.

By predicting water inflow, for example, the balance between maintaining water in the reservoir and releasing water to avoid overflow can be monitored. At times of peak flow, for example, the reservoir needs to be emptied before the flow arrives as outflow is often slower than inflow. On the other hand the reservoir needs to be maintained as full as possible for hydro electricity generation. Forecasting inflow is thus a crucial element to the management of a reservoir.

Algorithms used for this task include neural networks.
